Technical SEO Checklist — Pre-Launch and Ongoing Audits

A comprehensive technical SEO checklist covering crawlability, indexation, security, performance, and monitoring for production websites.

technical-seoauditchecklist

Technical SEO ensures search engines can crawl, render, and index your site efficiently. Content and links matter little if bots hit redirect loops, blocked resources, or duplicate URL variants. Use this checklist before launch and revisit it quarterly—or after any major platform change.

Crawlability and Indexation

Verify robots.txt allows crawling of public assets while blocking admin, cart, and internal search result pages. Confirm XML sitemaps list only canonical, indexable URLs and are referenced in robots.txt. Check for orphan pages and excessive crawl traps (infinite calendar filters, session IDs in URLs).

In Google Search Console, review Coverage and Page Indexing reports. Investigate "Crawled – currently not indexed" and "Discovered – currently not indexed" buckets—often signals of quality, duplication, or weak internal linking rather than hard blocks.

Pre-Launch Essentials

  • HTTPS everywhere with valid certificates and HSTS after validation.
  • Single preferred host (www vs non-www) via 301 redirects.
  • Custom 404 page with helpful navigation links.
  • No accidental noindex on production (common staging config leak).
  • Mobile-friendly responsive design passing Google's mobile usability checks.

URL Integrity and Redirects

Map all legacy URLs during migrations with 301 redirects to the closest semantic match—never mass-redirect everything to the homepage. Audit redirect chains longer than two hops and replace with direct targets. Eliminate redirect loops and mixed HTTP/HTTPS internal links.

Implement canonical tags on pages accessible via multiple paths (tracking parameters, trailing slash variants). Use parameter handling in Search Console for known benign params, but prefer canonicalization in markup when possible.

Site Performance and Rendering

Confirm critical content appears in raw HTML without requiring user interaction or excessive JavaScript execution. Test with URL Inspection "View crawled page" and with JavaScript disabled. Block unnecessary resources in robots.txt sparingly—blocking CSS or JS can prevent proper rendering evaluation.

Monitor Core Web Vitals field data. Set up CDN caching, compression (Brotli/gzip), and HTTP/2 or HTTP/3. Preconnect to critical third-party origins only when truly needed.

Structured Data and International

Validate JSON-LD on key templates. Ensure hreflang reciprocity across locales. Confirm lang attributes and localized metadata. Check that paginated and filtered URLs do not pollute the index.

Security and Trust Signals

Security affects SEO indirectly through user trust and crawl behavior. Keep CMS and plugins patched. Implement CSP headers where feasible. Monitor for hacked content injections via Search Console security issues and regular site crawls.

Ongoing Monitoring

Automate weekly crawls to catch new 404s, title duplicates, and slow pages. Track log files or CDN analytics for crawl budget anomalies on large sites. Document ownership: who fixes broken redirects, who updates sitemaps, who reviews index bloat after marketing campaigns add landing pages.

Technical SEO is maintenance, not a one-time project. Sites that institutionalize this checklist avoid the catastrophic ranking losses that follow neglected migrations and silent configuration regressions.
